Population fluctuations: "Data from Islay indicates that the population across the whole island fluctuates in synchrony with populations on the mainland." - Larval Survival Strategies (Butterfly Conservation Ireland). Heraf fremgår det, dels at Hedepletvingelarverne er uspiselige for fugle bl.a. pga. tornene på tornvorterne, og fordi de udskiller en ildelugtende væske, hvis de tages af en fugl.
